- The Horror! The Horror! Show needs cash infusion

Something wicked this way comes – depending on sponsorship.
The Keewatin Horror hopes to scare up some funding from local business to help it
continue.
The Horror is an annual theatre event on Halloween night in the backyard of 255
Keewatin Ave. incorporating live actors and fully functional props to give area children
a good scare. It’s like a haunted house, only outside. Last year’s attendance was
about 300, double the previous year’s.
But the cost to put on the production also increases each year as the project is
expanded.
"I’m still paying off last year’s event," says organizer Jeff Cooke.
This year organizers have decided to approach local businesses that may have the
most to gain from sponsoring the event.
"We’re not looking to sell out or anything but we’d like to see some of the smaller
business contribute what they can in exchange for advertising," says Cooke. "We’re
not looking for any particular amount of money — any contribution will do."
The event started when Cooke, 19, and his friends were small children. Some
neighbours in the area just north of Eglinton Ave. and Mt. Pleasant Rd. held a haunted
house each year, which became a tradition. Unfortunately they moved away, and
when they left something just wasn’t right about Halloween, says Cooke.
So neighbours took it upon themselves to put on the show in 1997.
"It’s harder to scare kids these days so we sometimes go over the top with it," says
Cooke. "We’ve added things like a life-sized gallows pole with someone hanging
from it, and we use props like ground beef for special effects. It’s gotten expensive,
and this is why we’re asking for help."
In return for the assistance, the Keewatin Horror will put a company’s name and logo
on its website at www.thekeewatinhorror.com and promotional advertisements will be
on the back of the official Keewatin Horror T-shirt, as well as displayed on the night of
the event.
